‘Shelter in Place’ How I’m Getting Through It!

Week 5 of “shelter in place” and it actually doesn’t feel as bad as I thought it would. I’m not going to pretend that I don’t miss going out or seeing friends or just doing something other than watching tv and cooking or working for that matter haha. But it has been fun, call me crazy but I’ve had the opportunity to spend more time with my parents which I haven’t done since I was a kid. I joked with them that they didn’t expect their 30 year old daughter to come live with them again :P they thought they were rid of me! Haha To be fair they don’t seem to mind having me around. Gives them someone else to talk to and do things with. So I guess there are some bright sides to look at while all this craziness is happening.

I’ve had the chance to help my Dad with his car a few times and I’m pretty sure he wishes I was a bit stronger and able to help more but I try at least. He’s tried to get me to learn how to put chains on my car, which I should probably actually learn. Plus, I very much appreciate him trying to teach me and it really is such a Dad thing to do haha! So I probably should take him up on it before I head back to SF.

My Dad and I also went snow shoeing last weekend since he’s super into hiking/camping and well doing anything outdoors. It was some nice Father/Daughter bonding we did since my Mum had knee surgery a month ago and isn’t able to do anything too active like that. Was a perfect day to get some fresh air in before the storm it even though we did get caught in it a bit haha.

We’ve also been playing with the drone and I’m trying to get more and more comfortable using it. Even with my lack of skills using the remote I’ve been able to get some nice shots of Lake Tahoe and our neighborhood.

Since my Mum isn’t able to do anything too strenuous we’ve been able to binge watch a few different tv series and a few movies. In addition we’ve been splitting cooking duties from easy classic meals to a little more complicated when I have more time. Kinda nice to change up the meals since my Mum is used to making certain dishes and I have my own favorites. The other night I even made us pizza from scratch, well almost we bought the dough pre-made haha. But it was a success and the parents were happy to change it up a bit! Anyway, it’s been really fun and she’s even gotten into doing puzzles which I’ve tried to help with... really not much though haha. It’s showing to be pretty challenging. So, I’ll stick to the kitchen duties and baking or making dinner/lunch/breakfast.

There are times where I miss being at my apartment and in my own bed or even having my desk setup! Working from home up here has had its challenging since I’m a Graphic Designer It makes working much easier when I’m able to use my Wacom tablet and have a monitor but I don’t have that here. I’m making do with what I can though could be far worse. I did find a great idea tat has helps a little bit! So I kinda hijacked out family room and now use our TV as a second screen haha so it’s been working out alright so far. Then you add the cats into the mix from joining some of my meetings or just give me cuddles in the middle of my work day it can be a bit distracting. However, I wouldn’t change it I kinda love the kitty cuddles and slight distractions to help break up the day.

Anyway, I hope everyone is surviving this quarantine/ ‘Shelter in place’ know that we’re all feeling the same thing and hopefully if anyone is having a hard time you know you have people there to support you. Try and stay positive we will get through this!

A few little other things I’ve been doing to help with everything is many calls, FaceTimes and happy hours with friends and coworkers. I’ve found that has really helped feel a bit more like I’m less isolated and alone and that I still have friends!!!

Another thing I’ve been doing is sticking to a routine and continuing to do morning workouts either on Instagram Lives with @tonitiup or on demand on a few other websites. But if you aren’t familiar with Tone it Up check them out they are GREAT! They are amazing and have kept my mind & body moving when I can’t go to a gym or any other workout classes. I’ve found a few other websites doing online workouts too which I’ve loved!

Hope these are some helpful tips and stay safe and healthy! Feel free to reach out/comment with how you’re getting by and staying sane!

TV SHOWS: (Here are some of the show’s I’ve been binge watching but of course there are so many more than just these. But I’ve found sometimes it’s hard to find shows that i like as well as my parents and so far these have all been pretty big hits with them!)

WORKOUTS: (Ab goals by the end of this lock down.. we’ll see how it goes but hey I’m trying anything and everything at this point to just keep active besides an afternoon stroll in the fresh air)
